Contraceptive implant / Nexplanon
The contraceptive implant Nexplanon is fitted by Dr Gillespie, Dr Whyte and Dr Burns. If you are interested in Nexplanon please book a GP appointment to discuss this first. You will then be asked to return for a longer appointment to allow time for fitting.
Combined oral contraceptive pill
Patients who take the combined oral contraceptive pill (which contains oestrogen) need to have a GP check-up and a blood pressure check when their prescription is due for renewal, at least once a year. This can be done by booking a GP appointment at the surgery, or by completing an eConsult (from the list of conditions select ‘Contraception’ then ‘Contact your GP practice’). If you use eConsult you still need to have a blood pressure check, this can be done at home if you have access to a blood pressure monitor, or by coming in to reception to check your blood pressure using our monitor - this doesn’t require an appointment (please note this blood pressure checking option is only available for patients who need this for a contraceptive pill review).
Coil / IUD
Contraceptive coils are fitted at Chalmers Clinic, for information on how to book this see their website: Lothian Sexual Health | Sexual Health advice for Edinburgh and the Lothians
We are able to remove coils here at the surgery. If you are having a coil removed it is important either to use an additional method of contraception (e.g. condoms), or avoid intercourse, for 7 days prior to attending for removal – this is to avoid a small risk of pregnancy after the coil is removed.
